Welcome to the Birdcage

The Birdcage is a small, independent gallery situated in the foyer of design agency Born Digital, in the fair city of Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Our next exhibition We All Own The Mona Lisa brings together the work of Edinburgh based artist Thomas Aitchison and that of Newcastle based James Hutchinson.

With his experiments into Pop Art and Op Art, by way of the polystyrene ceiling tile and piano wire, Thomas Aitchison brings us a wry look at modern values. His paintings and assemblages use a palate of the intricate yet standardised forms and images in common currency to bring into question what is contingent and what is necessary.

James Hutchinson takes us from W A, with the last in a series of screen based animations created on his mobile phone. Distinctly contingent, Hutchinson thumbs his nose at the system; whist not literally drawing a mustache on the Mona Lisa, his embracing armchairs are similarly absurd.

Private View: 6 - 9pm. 27th. October with performance by James Hutchinson and Graham Mitchinson as H&M. The exhibition will open 28th. October.
